FIREFIGHTER KILLED-EJECTED/CRASH WHILE RESPONDING-LODD-Louisiana

A Firefighter with the Meaux-Nunez Volunteer Fire Department in Vermilion Parish (Louisiana) was killed in the Line of Duty after the SUV he was driving to an emergency call left the roadway and crashed into a ditch.

Firefighter Robert Hughes, 49, was ejected and killed in the single-vehicle crash that happened on LA 14 on Friday, Aug. 21, around 1500.

Reports are that Hughes was driving a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe east on LA 14 while responding to that run when, for reasons still under investigation, the SUV veered off the highway in a curve and went into a ditch.

Hughes was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle, sustained serious injuries, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

A passenger in the vehicle, who was also not buckled up, was also ejected and sustained serious injuries.
