FIREFIGHTER, 37, KILLED IN APPARATUS CRASH- SRI LANKA – LODD

A Firefighter of the Fire Brigade of Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) was killed in a crash on Tuesday when the fire apparatus slipped off the street in Neervely, Jaffna. The victim is identified as 37 year old firefighter Ariyaratnam Sakaayarajah. 2 other Firefighters were also admitted to hospital with injuries. Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In Peace.

OF INTEREST: The Northern Province of Sri Lanka, about 3,400 square miles in area, has ONE single firehouse. Jaffna is the main city in the province with a population of about 500,000 and the station is located there. There are a total of 18 carer firefighters in the brigade with three shifts of 6 each. They work a 24/48 shift, one day on and two days off. There are no volunteers or volunteer companies.
