Cops arrested a 17-year-old Redlands boy for vandalizing a
fire engine headed to a medical
emergency. The incident on Olive Avenue occurred around
0100 Saturday. The
teen approached the fire truck which had its emergency lights on.
The
fire apparatus engineer reduced the truck’s speed and that’s when
the teen jumped on the front bumper and began banging his head
and fists against the windshield.
The engine’s crew treated the boy at the
scene. He was suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance.
“Fire Engineer Ley’s actions no doubt saved the life of the individual who was
determined to have an encounter with the engine, as well as ensuring the safety
of the crew,” Battalion Chief Jim Topoleski said in the statement.
The teen
was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and interfering with emergency personnel.
He was subsequently transported to an area hospital for medical treatment
but has since been released to his parents.
